Union Jack in tatters, fragmented image, olympic shard pink

I have been experimenting with photos and was drawn to these ragged symbols of imperialism. The strange pink that will always remind me of the Olympic symbol of 2012. The old shed tucked away in the corner of the pier. The image I captured by twisting my iPhone resulted in this – odd distortions, a collapse of symbols, a sadness, yet also possessing a gritty determination.

The fire exit is no longer clear

The Tory party blue still shines

(Unfortunately?)

The flags struggle to flutter

But the sun is shining

In September

All is the same as it ever was

But may be irretrievably different

For the arts

The word shard means something different in 2013

It means spontaneous combustion

It means something broken

Hopefully not beyond repair

As in Winchester Cathedral

The Cromwellian damage to the stained glass window

Made good

But never the same again
