About Carolyn

Photo on 2015-08-07 at 14.56Flow Contemporary Arts founder Carolyn Black has extensive experience of the arts sector–  as an artist, a writer, educator, mentor, project manager, curator and producer. For the last twelve years she has been working primarily as a freelance producer, project manager and curator, producing contemporary visual arts projects in unusual locations. Places are important to her work – they are never merely a location or backdrop to arts events – they are also the inspiration. You can view recent drawings here.

Since 2000 she has delivered projects for other organisations and artists in collaboration with a myriad of partners. She now has a wide network of partners and a unique list of specialists she has worked with – from engineers to acoustic scientists, geologists to soldiers. Flow Contemporary Arts works alongside partners, both art and non-art, to collaborate and deliver ambitious, newly commissioned artworks, to be seen by diverse audiences in unusual locations – beaches and woodlands, canal-sides and redundant buildings – anything is possible when good partnerships are secured and strong visions shared.

Carolyn is a leader and collaborator, a project manager, curator, writer, blogger and networker. She is always keen to share her learning with others. As well as actively delivering projects, she is available to advise and support others on how best to approach working in non-gallery locations and get their own projects off the ground.

Hailing from a background as an arts practitioner, Carolyn has initiated and delivered numerous public art works – ranging from scattered-site urban international exhibitions to singular sculptures in a rural context. She has substantial experience of fundraising, networking, marketing and of course working with artists on the ground. She sees herself as a producer rather than a curator and her public art project management work benefits from her experience of being both an artist and commissioner. Should you require references, she will gladly provide contact details for artists she has worked with, partners she has worked alongside, and organisations she has worked for.

Organisations she has worked in partnership with, or for, include Situations, Arnolfini, University of Southampton, Prema Art Centre, Watershed, Forestry Commission, Bristol City Council, Bristol UWE, SVA Stroud, ALIAS, Architecture Centre
